Mistakes to avoid

Writing a weekly newsletter immediately (when starting)

If you can relate to this, my advice is probably gonna come as a shock.

  1. Focus on growing socials first (for me it was IG; I put my newsletter on waitlist)

  2. Promote lead magnet to drive subs, don’t write weekly articles yet (if no one’s really reading them - you can do monthly articles instead)

  3. Once you get enough subscribers (and if you have enough time/energy), start writing regular newsletters

But this advice is mainly only for people just starting a newsletter, because focusing your energy is important.

Posting new videos consistently (without improving hooks)

I see a lot of videos like “learn more by subscribing to my newsletter!”

But social media is a different ballgame…

  1. Build intrigue (like a story) in the first 2 seconds of the video

  2. Understand the different hooks (text on screen, visual footage, voiceover/sound)

  3. Tweak script to optimize for retention

  4. Focus on entertainment/value instead of purely educational

  5. Give people a reason to subscribe (lead magnet)

Not optimizing your profile

Someone I know got 2 million views on a video, but only has 500 followers.

I got 1 million views on a video, and gained 40k+ followers and 10k+ subscribers just from that video.

There are 3 reasons for that:

  1. Their video doesn’t give people a reason to check out their profile for more (i.e. posting many different topics or not having a call to action)

  2. Their video doesn’t look related to the profile (looks like a personal profile rather than brand or personal brand profile)

  3. Their profile bio doesn’t make it compelling to take a desired action (follow or subscribe), because it talks about them instead of what they can help you with

Personal story

“I wish I didn’t post these videos here…”

I thought this 1 year ago, after some of my videos went viral on TikTok.

The account I was running for my previous job shot up to 50k followers.

People still comment and purchase that company’s courses.

“I should’ve posted these on my own account and grew a personal brand instead.”

I knew that when/if I left the company (and I did; I got laid off), that social media growth would be theirs, not mine.

So I copy pasted the same techniques, and now I have 69k followers which I monetized through my newsletter.

But something I noticed…

Many people want to start their own brand like I have.

But they don’t know where to start. I see them make the same mistakes over and over again (because I’ve been there!).

So I’m thinking of creating something new to help…

Example video hooks

Here are some video hooks/frameworks I’ve seen be successful for newsletters.

Notice how most of them involve stories (human connection, wanting to learn more) and are more “entertaining” than educational (which I’ve tested and saw worked better).
